Surprising resurrection of a trolley route in Hangzhou on the opening day of Olympic Games
While the world's attention is still focused on the spetacular display of fireworks and performances in Beijing's Bird Nest Stadium. Good news for trolley fans alike also errupted from southern China. On the early morning hours of 08/08/08, three Changjiang Flxible trolleys retrofitted with lithium batteries began revenue operation on Hangzhou's route 188.
The air-conditioned trolleys operate an approximately 9 km course from the waterfront of Xihu (West Lake) national scenic resort to Hangzhou north Long Distance Bus Station. It is a shorter version of the longer route 188 which operates from Hangzhou north LBS to Hangzhou Rail-way Station. Route 188 is a limited stop service introduced a few years ago while trolley route 155/K155 was still in place, following that notorious farewell ''KISS" in 2006, route 188 became an increasingly popular route linking downtown Hangzhou and north end. Last year when the construction of Hangzhou's first subway began, overhead were removed from Hangzhou's most prestigious shopping street, Yan'an Road", forcing the two highly popular trolley routes, 151 and 290 to relocate to a different street which is parallel to Yan'an. While these two trolley routes are gradually building up their new customer base, it is widely hoped that trolleys should return to Yan'an some day.
With much effort spent on researching lithium battery, it is made possible for trolleys to return to the financial center of the city. Each trolley is equipped with 18 battery packs, and each pack contains 10 batteries, the size of the battery pack is about the same as a computer hard drive. Line voltage of Hanghzou trolley overhead is between 570V to 615V, the circuit before the depoling point is maintained near the maximum voltage. When trolleys depole from the overhead, batteries can provide near maximum voltage, by the time when trolley reaches Waterfront destination, loop around, and return to repoling point, a total distance of 10km, the voltage is dimished to about 586V. If recharging is still not possible at this time and voltage continues to dwindle to below 570V, normal operation cannot be sustained. According to a technical manager of Hangzhou trolley-bus company, the ratio between charging capacity and consumption is 1.5:1. Despite the increasing cost of these new trolleys compare to conventional trolleys without battery packs, the overall cost is still at 90% level of a diesel bus, and it is zero emission. If trial operation is successful, the local trolley company plans to replace all 13 units currently operate on the shorter version of route 188 with new "line-to-battery" trolleys.
