What a boss  you have!  Be patient and wait until the end of the year, then talk to him/her and ask for a salary raise.
You do need a short vacation. Last Xmas, I went to Hai Nan Dao. I was very impressed by the weather and beach. Do you like swimming? The water there was cristal clear. You could easily see 10 meters deep in the water. I swam a couple of times there. It was not cold at all. Nai nan Dao is also a good place to enjly the seafood if you like it. it is fresh and cheap. Hehe, it sounds like I am a travel agent.

I also have been very busy at work recently. I usually got busy during Oct and Nov. I am still thinking if I can have a winter vacation this year so that I can go back to China.

How is your weekend?

Tonight there's firework in HZ.  So all roads to the west lake crowded with thousands of people.  Extremely wonderful moment, you can watch it firing, and disappearing, then it will remain in your mind, you can never catch it.  Sometimes our life is like this, and we are watched. :)
I had a very very busy weedend, I attent psychology courses, interesting but difficult, and I have already returned all my maths knowledges to teachers

An interesting test: you are going through a dense forest, you are alone..... and you are allowed to choose two animals with you.  what will be your choice?

Wish everyone a lovely new week!  Busy but enjoy yourself!

Hangzhou residents lived 4 more years than others? I've never known that. So I should go back to Hangzhou right away. Am I too late?

I understand why you said HZ is better than BJ or SH.  But people usually love their hometowns more. Native SH definitely think SH is the best place in the whole world. My parents chose to live in BJ after they retired a few years ago. They thought BJ was a better place because it was more convenient for them. Also BJ has more things to do. Shanghai ren would think SH, SUzhou, and Wuxi are all better than HZ. Many people in other places think HZ is very good for tourists, but not the best place to work and live since it has less job opportunities comparing to many other big cities. I have lots of friends in BJ. As soon as I tried to convince them that HZ was the best place for living, they all laughed at me.
I think I love HZ more just because I grew up by the lake. I have never objectively compared HZ to other cities.

Jim-helen,
You are absolutely right that living in US has many disadvantages comparing to living in China as a Chinese. That is precisely why so many overseas Chinese choose to go back to China in the last several years. In general, people love their own culture and hometowns, so they like to live in the environment they are familiar with even though it may not be the best in reality.

Talking about neighbor relationship, most Americans get along with their neighbors very well. It is a matter of whether a person from a different culture background such as a Chinese, can have a deep good relationship with his American neighbors. It also depends on what types of living habitat ( I am not sure if Habitat is a good word here, I hope Zhiren, TeresaHe, or someone else come here to correct it) you are in. Many Americans live in single family houses so they could have bigger spaces and more privacy which, on the other side, makes communications with neighbors less convenient. This is also true in China. When I was little, we used to live in a 居民大院 ( is it called a living compound?  I saw the English translation before, but can’t remember it anymore.  Need help again   ). Most neighbors had such good relationships. We could go inside someone else’s house without knocking the door, even without anyone inside. Basically, excellent relationships, but no privacy at all. Later, as most other people, we moved into an apartment in big box of building. Neighbors barely talked to each other, and we had less and less communications. My parents told me that they still didn’t have idea who their neighbors were after they lived in BJ for a couple of years.  How do you think?  Did you find it’s easy for you to know every neighbor around you?

i never go abroad before, but as far as i know from american movies that the neighbours often use the law to accuse eachother even they made noise .
is that true?
I only saw this in movies, but never heard of it in the community I am with. In general, Americans are very civilized. Many years ago, a well-known professor from BJ came to US as a visiting scholar. One year later, he made the comment saying "I have finally realized what 五讲四美 is about ".  I am not saying that Americans are better civilized than poeple in other countries. But at least, they do look more polite than others. "五讲四美" is one of the big conflicts that many Seaturtles encountered when they just came back to China after many years of living in north Americans, as well as other western countries.  If you go to ask Zhiren, he might have the same feeling.

I have a friend from LA.He came to Hangzhou in July.he told me hangzhou is very beautiful and clean.but he likes LA more.I asked why.He said he felt free in LA and there were more devices which provide convenience for elders. America beyonds China at least 20 years.
how do you think about it?

Apple, welcome on board!
Riding a rollercoaster is one of the most favorable things in my life. Los Angeles has the number one best Amusement park in the world. It is called Six Flags Magic Mountain Amusement park. It is neat where I am living. So I have the privilege to go there several times a year.  Many Americans , especially the teenagers, are crazy about rollercoaster. I talked about it in one of my early responses in this forum. I also talked about Rose Parade of Pasadena before ( I think both are on the page). So you might want to go there to have a look.

I notice you are from Nanchang, a city I visited this past summer before I went to Lu Shan Mountain. Nanchang, just like Hangzhou, is a very pretty place.

There is one little think I don’t quite understand in your post. Did you ask me to respond to you in this forum, or to give you my email address so that you could better talk to me?

Dahlia,
I fully understand what your friend said about HZ and LA.  It all depends on what you want to compare. First, US is the strongest country, at least economically, in the world and LA is the second largest city in US, so LA is much more developed than HZ.  Comparing to LA, Hangzhou is at most a 小家碧玉.  Your friend is also right that US provides one of the best facilities and health insurances to old people even though we often heard US is a grave yard for old people. You can list countless things to tell LA is better than HZ. But HZ has its own advantages that LA doesn’t.  HZ has a very long proud history. HZ has its beautiful West Lake and many scenic spots. Most importantly, people love their own hometowns more than any other places in general. So HZ ren often think HZ is better than LA, as well as other cities. Is your friend a native Hangzhou?

TOP

Thank you for your opinion,OopsWrongPlace

He is a native LA.
I think we should learn from U.S regarding the social service.i see many roads for blinds are occupied by people with bright eyes. And in the bus, there are few people 让座.I often take bus with my baby,if the seats are taken,i have to carry my baby standing.if it was me,i will ask the people who need seat indeedly to take my seat without thinking.I don't know how is it in U.S.?
When I was a student,i usually went to library. We prefer to be seated alone rather than with others at one table unless there were few seats. They said people like to be seated together in U.S.Is it truth?

hi, dahlia29,
if I were you, i would say to the guy, "would you pls leave your seat to my  baby?":)
even now, when i saw the old or baby standing, while the young sitting, i would ask him/her to rangzuo.  it always works.
maybe he/she wants to do rangzuo, but he is shy. so it's kind for you to push him a little bit.  don't feel you are duoguangxianshi. :))
he is learning rangzuo, when  he gets it, he will thank you for your push.
oops, zhiren, do you agree?

No wonder he likes LA more. For me, I still think HZ is better even though I love LA very much too. Because of the many advantages that LA has, most Chinese like LA. Once a Chinese moved to LA, he/she most likely will stay forever, or at least for many years.

it is very interesting that you said American students liked to sit together in libraries. I think you are probably right. Most big research universities have several large libraries. Unlike those in China, libraries in US univ. campuses are often pretty empty, seats are hardly occupied. it doesn't mean American students don't like to study. It happens probably because first, the libraries are very well equiped with more than enough desks and chairs. In the university I studied, a graduate student could even reserve a private cubic, like a small office with walls around, of his own for as long as he wanted in the library. So I practically had two offices, one in my my department as a teaching assistant, one in the library.   Second, a large portion of American college students stay in their dorms which, in general, also provide study areas and other good places for both studies and meetings. You are right that they don't go to libaries to sit there for study very often unless during mid term and final exam periods.  American students often go to libraries for group discussion or projects. I also often saw those couples ( I mean the boyfriends and girlfriends) sitting together to study. As you might know, boys are not allowed to stay over nights in girls' rooms in universities' dorms, and vice versa.

家有笨狗,
so, you had the same experience as I did. Sometimes I felt hesitated to tell people, especially native Hangzhous, that HZ is not well-known internationally at all. Even though Hangzhou has been going through tremendous changes in the past years, I doubt it will help to raise its fame dramatically. Internationally, Hangzhou's reputation, if it has, is far behind other places in China such as BJ, SH, Xian, Guangzhou, Tibet,Guilin, and Three Gorges. So I think the city government has lots to do in the future.

By the way, do you really have a dog at home?  Hehe, I have a lovely dog, a 1 year girl.

LA is huge. Its geographic covering is very different from any other major cities in US. The great LA area consists of several cities (towns), each of them is quite isolated from others.  I am living in a small town north of LA, while the place you are going to, that is, the place where most Chinese are living, is on the east of downtown LA. Even they are all in LA, I have to drive about 1 hour from my town to your town, assuming the traffic is clear. If you stay there for two months, you should be able to get access to the internet.
it seems you will spend the winter in LA. I am sure you will be very impressed with the sunshine-forever southern California. No one can resist Southern CA's nice weather in winter.
